        FMV: $1,200.00

A graduate of Emily Carr University, Gabrielle’s practice is split between painting, ceramics and more recently public art. Originally from the coast, she draws inspiration from dramatic overcast skies and themes of water, which reoccur throughout her practice. In 2015, the Caetani Centre’s very first ceramics artist residency (CeramAiR) brought Gabrielle to Vernon, where she since has made her home permanently. In 2017 Gabrielle was awarded a major public art commission by the Government of Canada, City of Vernon and Downtown Vernon Association to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary, whereby she enlisted the community to help create a winding river mosaic that was successfully installed in downtown Vernon’s Cenotaph Park. More recently, Gabrielle’s solo show “Down Came the Rain” is on exbibit at Gallery Vertigo this June, 2020.

          Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
          FMV: $950.00

My paintings often include textures such as fabric and various other mediums. Inspired by nature's colours and shapes, I begin the creative process with a focal point and then move around the canvas until the edges are anchored. The shapes within the painting and their relationship to each other are integral to the works' entire expression.

I love texture in paintings thus I wanted people to be able to feel the piece as well as see it (Probably not something you want to do in an art gallery!). Touch is just as important of a sense as is sight.

Why do I paint? For my whole career, I used my left brain. Once I started painting, a whole new world opened up for me, for which I am truly grateful. I would encourage anyone to try it. You do not have to become a master to derive joy in your work.

I believe that art is visual storytelling, communicating a needed message, showcasing beliefs, heritage and vision. My work has deliberately evolved to depict the complexity and contrast of life through a combination of mediums, symbolism and surface patterns. I am inspired by creating poignant works of art that catch the attention of people distracted by everyday life, as a rally-cry to remind us all to focus on what matters most. Intuitively acknowledging the uncertainty of life, fuels my creative mind and heart to keep expressing unedited emotions that positively transform our collective future.

Influenced by artists associated with Abstract Expressionism, Valerie loves to paint fearlessly with joy and freedom, most often creating bold, colourful impressions with depth and energy. "Mystic Shallows' tends toward her 'softer' work, focusing on a mood created by the natural beauty of our world. Still typically characteristic of her paintings, it features a layered and marked surface with numerous areas of interest to entertain the viewer. Retired many years ago from the legal and corporate world, Valerie resides with her husband on beautiful Kalamalka Lake which inspired 'Mystic Shallows'.

Art is learning to express myself in ways that I cannot otherwise do. It’s about taking risks, learning through growth, living with the fear of making mistakes, and connecting with people who understand.
The Japanese principle of satori describes my connection to art: satori is continually acquiring new points of view and perspectives through which we deal with life.

I am a Canadian abstract artist living in Vernon, British Columbia. I work primarily in acrylic and uses a variety of mixed media to enhance my work. I am a member of the Okanagan Artists Of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Fiona Neal is an abstract artist working primarily in acrylics on canvas. Her work explores the moments when spontaneous creativity gives over to true intuitive expression. Now living in BC, Fiona completed her art education in the UK.
Sought after as an artist and an educator, her work can be found in private and public collections over 3 continents

“Much of my work is a reflection of my attempts to truly belong in my own space, not just as an immigrant to a new country, but more importantly within myself. It is a culmination of a personal journey that I mistakenly thought was re-invention, but now realise was re-discovery. It is a way to not only express emotion, but to allow it, accept it and claim it as our own.
Through the medium of painting I find ways to push boundaries and explore new lands. I love the parallels between this, my movements geographically, and my personal search for deeper self connection. To belong.
The unpredictability of imagination and of the fluid mediums I use, juxtaposed with an ordered thought process and the controlled brushstroke, make for a fascinating creative process.
As I paint, the image I am creating changes continually from a state of order to disorder and back again. I give up and regain control. Sometimes a dance, often a battle, but one I totally immerse myself in.
Within and without the canvas it is important for me to find the perfect balance between movement and fluidity, balance and stillness. By achieving this in my paintings I ground myself and find my own space here.
Painting is an integral part of who I am. It brings completion and peace, but also joy, vibrancy, excitement, and a future full of possibilities.”

Kathy Munts is a 2D artist residing in Lumby, BC. Her early work as a teenager was done solely in pencil. Many years later, once her children were finished high school, she fulfilled a long time goal to learn to paint with watercolors. Beginning with classes with local watercolorist and mentor Gail Short, Kathy also discovered sketchbook journaling. This made art an almost daily practice, a way to record inspirations, places and events that can be used for future projects as well as improving observation skills and techniques.

Whether it be with different media, textures, painting surfaces, techniques, or incorporating found objects into a piece, the possibilities for creative expression keep expanding, and making Kathy’s artistic journey one of exciting anticipation. Workshops with abstract artist Barry Rafuse have been instrumental in Kathy’s journey into mixed media and moving into a more non- representational style in some of of her more recent paintings. Nature and florals are a major source inspiration, but she also loves the challenge of doing a non-conceptual work and letting the painting dictate the journey. Kathy’s goal is to never stop learning, experimenting, and finding the extraordinary in the ordinary.

As Jean Matlack said “Affording myself painting time, I have learned to understand, is a practice of honouring something essential in my life. It is a source that is revelatory, mysterious, and ultimately joyous”.

Kathy has shown her work in juried and non-juried shows. She is an active member in the North Okanagan Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists, a member of the Okanagan Artists of Canada and member of the Lumby Artists Coop.

Jolene Mackie is an artist living and working in Kelowna BC. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Emily Carr University in 2009, Jolene has pursued art making professionally with a focus on the medium of oil painting. Jolene has exhibited her work widely throughout the Okanagan Valley and British Columbia, and has work in private collections around the world. Jolene finds inspiration in simple, fleeting moments: a unique quality of light, the shape of shadows, and the living palettes that colour our daily existence. Her work blends fascination with the world around us and the whimsy of human imagination into wholly unique visual experiences.

From custom pieces to curated series, her paintings are about the process of creating as much as the creation itself. For this reason she favours of oil paints, as their slower working time is both meditative and contemplative. Jolene is the 2017 recipient of the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan Visual Arts award, her work has been recognized for its visceral impact.
